The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is a department which is under the Prime Minister of India with headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. DAE was started in permanent basis in 1954 by a Presidential Order. DAE is being engaged in the development of nuclear power technology, applications of radiation technologies in the fields of agriculture, medicine, industry and forming an essential foundation on research. DAE consist of five centres which give under research, three organisations related to economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials and manufacturing of goods in factories.

Five public sector undertakings and three service organizations. It has the protection, backing, or support of two boards for promoting and funding research of a course of study) arranged for people who are not full-time members of a university in nuclear and allied fields. It also supports eight international institutes which do research in basic sciences, astronomy, astrophysics, cancer research and education. It also has an educational society that provides educational facilities for children of DAE employees. The important programs of the DAE are directed towards:
Improvising the share of nuclear power in the Power Sector by formulating which is starting and taking place naturally in a particular place and in other proven technologies, and to develop fast breeder reactors, as well as thorium-based reactors connected with fuel cycle facilities;
Constructing and controlling the functioning of research reactors for the production of radioisotopes, develop other sources of radiation such as accelerators and lasers, and developing and deploying radiation technology applications in the fields of medicine, agriculture, industry and forming an essential foundation in research.
Growing advanced technologies such as accelerators, lasers, supercomputers, robotics, areas related to Fusion research, strategic materials and instrumentation, and encouraging the transfer of technology to industry.
To do a particular research in nuclear energy and related realms of science; Interacting with universities and academic institutions; giving assistance to research development projects having a weight of DAE’s programs and cooperation between nations in advanced areas related to research and contribution to national security.
